Arabic Impact on Azerbaijan

The revolt spirit of the Arab world had and continues to have its impacts on the Middle East countries. Within the Arab countries itself the influence had similar results; People flown to the streets demanding their rights, and the dictators who promises changes, meantime restraining the media. However, in non-Arab countries of the region such as Turkey and Iran the situations were different.
Demonstrations took place in Turkey were quite normal and people normally expressed their will and support to the Muslim brothers. There was not even a sign of violence in the demonstrations what we cannot say about Iran. Actually, if Turkey can be considered as a country that benefited mostly from the recent events, the Islamic Republic of Iran is definitely the country who found herself in the stupidest position. It was very ridiculous when ayatollah backed the Arab revolutions calling them "Islamic" and after the demonstrations took place in Tehran, blamed Washington (and of course Tel Aviv ) in pulling the strains of the ongoing events.

The Arab revolt spirit influenced Armenian and Azerbaijan youth, too. Although these two countries are considered as a part of Southern Caucasus sub region of Europe, the common geography, history and values make them close to the Eastern countries.
It is all clear with Armenia; as long as Russia is powerful, Armenians can only dream about the freedom. They can demonstrate, they can chant as much as they wish. Neither a reform, nor a change they can obtain from the puppet rulers controlled, instructed and guided from Moscow.

However, in Azerbaijan where I try to live on, the situation radically differs from the other Middle Eastern societies. The government has close ties with Russia, but it maintains ties with the Western states, too. Often domestic politicians say that Azerbaijan tries to have good relations and to cooperate with every global or regional power. They call this tendency the "balanced policy". Nevertheless, in depth analysis show that the Azerbaijani government has taken a Russia oriented policy. However, it uses a Westernized "make-up", in order to ensure the persistence of their regime.
The reason why they need to appear the regime "democratic" is that they know the cost of stability in this country; The Azerbaijani people are capable of the revolution, too. A minor protest against the government makes them to act immediately. In the country where the ALL TV channels controlled by the regime, the not only the members of the opposition parties, but also ordinary people are jailed because of their political views the ruling elite fears from opposition. The regime needs to propagate tales about the "development with no analogue" 7/24. They need to invent the new ways for degrading the opposition.
However, the situation gradually goes out of control. Every single government member knows what we use Facebook, Twitter and YouTube for, but despite this fact they don't censor the Internet access. They have seen and now they know definitely how this censorship can fuel the revolt spirit, moreover, they do know that there is no practical way of shutting down the Internet access completely. We will always find ways of evading the censorship.
Instead, the regime uses other methods. The first method is "elucidating the moral aspects of the Internet". After the Arab revolution, suddenly so-called civil activists and parliament members (who were appointed by the regime) enlightened that there is an 18+ content in the web, and children can access to them. The university professors advices to the student to avoid of using "such things like Facebook" as "the honest man would not have a Facebook account" - it is very ridiculous when one argues how Facebook contradicts with the nation’s moral values. The second method is really dangerous for the Internet users. The regime monitors the activists and suppresses them. They are beaten, jailed, threatened, and wounded because of their "online behaviors".
The Azerbaijani government acts very precisely; they want to incept the idea that no other government is possible, because if the ruling party goes off the power, the predecessors will take them to the bloody days of 1990s (in fact, those times were not as bad as it is described, but rather better than nowadays). The majority people of Azerbaijan - who live in a poor condition, believe (or want to believe) in the regime's propaganda.
Recently, the government has launched anti-corruption campaign. Until the campaign the government persisted that there is no corruption in the country. And again, after the Arab revolutions the enlightenment stroke the high elite and they started to fight corruption and bribery... The officials deny saying "it is not a campaign as evaluates the opposition, it will be consistent". Certainly, they are not fighting against corruption, but rather bribery which occurs amongst lower/middle class: doctors, teachers, low ranked officials and etc. They have fired some of them as the campaign goes on. What the regime is forgotten about is the salary... If the monthly salary of e.g. doctor is ~$160 how can he survive? That's the point! The regime wants to say "we can fight against bribery. So, do you want us to do?" Not every Azerbaijani is economist or politician; hence not everybody can expose the real matters. So, the regime wants to make the ordinary people prefer the corrupted society to uncorrupted one. I don't know yet whether they have succeeded, or not.
However, now we know that the government fully controls the bribery. If there is a will of the regime, neither member of lower echelon is able to take a penny. Once more we got a proof that the corruption and bribery system is similar to pyramid and controlled from the top point - president.
The regime wants to show itself powerful, eternal and with no alternative. But they are vulnerable, they are weak. That's why they cannot allow the opposition leaders to be appeared on TV.
Now, time has come for the Internet. The Youth is getting more and more educated via this new type of media, and which is crucial factor, the Youth has begun to educate. The Youth do not necessarily need a leader anymore.
The regime sees that the time is running out for them. Will they make comprises, or struggle until the "last bullet"?... The latter is not credible, after the current events in Libya.
P.S. The new era’s tendency: it's time for the media to restrain the dictators.

Thanks for whole&real description of current state&population situation in Azerbaijan. these arguments are true. we are able to make the Government to change their mind in positive way. what i am thinking is there are two factors in state officer's hand: Islam and Garabag. In case of demonstrations and mass meetings these problems might be artificially appeared from nowhere. the state will try to highlight Garabag conflict in TV and mass media every day showing as if possible variant of war or would make some as you said ''make-up'' operation in religious sector in such way as to show to everybody (outside especially) we face Islamic extremism in order to cool internal situation. but we should do our best.

Yes, the two factors - Islam and Karabakh have been used many times by the regime.
Furthermore, ordinary members of ruling party claim that we are not capable of democracy, yet. However, Georgian instance prooved that even a criminal country like Georgia can be transformed to democracy in a short period of time.
